California: 2023 Bills Related to MPA

In October, Justice in Aging, a national non-profit legal advocacy organization that fights senior poverty and has been closely involved in MPA development, released a document of the 2023 Legislative Bills related to California’s MPA. 

The document summarizes the bills under each of the California MPA five bold goals: Housing for All Ages and Stages; Health Reimagined; Inclusion & Equity, Not Isolation; Caregiving that Works; and Affording Aging. This year, 12 bills were signed into law, 5 were vetoed, and a number of two-year bills will continue moving through the legislative process in 2024. Read the full document here

Massachusetts releases reimagine aging podcast 

The age- and dementia-friendly movement continues to grow in Massachusetts – there are now more than 200 communities working on age- and dementia-friendly initiatives, with many earning the Age-Friendly Designation and/or signing a Dementia Friendly Pledge.  To highlight the progress and innovations taking place in Massachusetts, the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, in partnership with Point32Health Foundation and the Massachusetts Healthy Aging Collaborative (MHAC,) released a new podcast:ReiMAgine Aging. The podcast highlights voices from statewide and community leaders, older adults, and non-profits who are taking part in the age- and dementia-friendly movement. Series episodes focus on how communities are updating infrastructure, food accessibility, expanding affordable supportive housing, increasing transportation options, and much more! The podcast is available now on SpotifyApple Podcasts, as well as online at reimagineaging.net. Tennessee launches new data dashboard 

Tennessee’s MPA dashboard provides comprehensive aging-related data and statistics on demographics, health and well-being, economic security, social engagement, and community support. Users can utilize the dashboard to identify disparities, monitor progress, and measure the impact of policies and interventions aimed at improving the well-being of Tennessee’s older adults. Visit the dashboard here.

In January 2022, The SCAN Foundation provided support to three advocacy coalitions to develop local Master Plans for Aging with a focus on addressing the unique challenges of aging in rural communities. As the current scope of project nears an end, the three regions will convene to share selected findings from their needs assessment pertaining to housing, transportation, healthcare access, and resource awareness; regional recommendations for program and policy implementation; lessons learned; and next steps for the regions.

On November 7, the American Society on Aging (ASA) hosted a Future Proof Webinar: Centering Equity and Family Caregivers in State Multisector Plans for Aging. During this webinar, experts discussed the new MPA measure in the AARP long-term services and supports (LTSS) Scorecard and explained how states can center equity in their MPAs, reflecting the voices, experiences and recommendations of all stakeholders. Listen to the recording here.
