Longevity Ready Maryland Act! (April 2026)
April 15, 2026
The State of Maryland has reached a historic milestone with the passage and signing of the Longevity Ready Maryland (LRM) Act (House Bill 278, Senate Bill 113)—a landmark law that transforms how the state approaches aging. With this action, Maryland has become the first state to enact legislation addressing the impact of longevity and the sixth state to transition a multisector plan for aging into permanent law.
The LRM Act establishes a comprehensive, cross-sector framework focused on preparing individuals and communities for longer lives while maximizing the benefits of an aging society. By breaking down silos across transportation, housing, health, and commerce, Maryland is building a more coordinated and sustainable approach to aging policy.

A Vision for Longevity
The Act advances a bold vision: ensuring every Marylander has the opportunity to live a long, healthy life with dignity, security, and purpose.
Governor Wes Moore emphasized this commitment, noting that the LRM Act provides a roadmap to build a more resilient state where residents are supported at every stage of life.
Key Pillars of the LRM Act
The legislation introduces several foundational components:
System-Wide Advocacy
The Maryland Department of Aging serves as a lead advocate across all state agencies, aligning policies with the needs of an aging population.A Modernized Commission on Aging
The Commission now includes experts in technology, health care, consumer protection, and innovation, along with representatives from diverse communities.Public Accountability
The state will track progress through a public digital resource, issue annual reports, and provide comprehensive updates every four years.
From Plan to Law
The LRM Act builds on a multi-year effort to modernize Maryland’s approach to aging:
2024: Executive order launched development of the state’s first multisector plan
2025: Longevity Ready Maryland plan formally adopted
2026: LRM Act signed into law, codifying the plan
This transition makes Maryland the sixth state to enact its multisector plan through legislation, setting a new national standard.
Core Goals
The law establishes four long-term goals:
Build a longevity ecosystem
Promote economic opportunity
Prepare residents to afford longevity
Optimize health, wellness, and mobility
A National Leader
With nearly one in four Marylanders projected to be age 60 or older within the next four years, the state is proactively preparing for a major demographic shift.
Through the LRM Act, Maryland is not only anticipating the future—it is actively shaping it. By fostering collaboration, strengthening systems, and valuing the contributions of older adults, the state is setting a powerful example of what it means to be a place for all ages.
Congratulations to all Marylanders!
